What is LASIK eye surgery?
LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is the most popular and well-known type of laser eye surgery, and can be used to treat myopia (short sight), hyperopia (long sight), astigmatism, and wavefront abnormalities.

How does LASIK work?
During a LASIK procedure, the outer layers of the cornea, which is the transparent tissue layer that sits over the eye, are lifted back, revealing the deeper cornea tissue. For the outer layer to be gently lifted, the femtosecond laser is used to send microscopic laser pulses onto the cornea, which causes bubbles to form underneath. This results in a flap, which the surgeon can lift and lay back easily and painlessly. The surgeon then reshapes the cornea using an Excimer laser, correcting the eye’s refractive error. The flap is then replaced, and is smoothed back into place by the surgeon and the healing process begins.
Who is suitable for LASIK?
Most people are suitable to undergo LASIK surgery, however it may not be suited to those with flat or thin corneas. Both LASIK and LASEK surgery require patient prescriptions to fall within a certain range in order to qualify for laser eye surgery. We carry out adequate assessments during the consultation process to ensure only those best suited to LASIK will receive this treatment. Many other options are available if LASIK does not seem like the best option for you.
What happens during LASIK eye surgery?
Here is a general outline of the LASIK procedure to give you an understanding of what happens:
- Local anaesthetic eye drops are applied to both eyes.
- The femtosecond laser is used. The microscopic laser pulses are directed on the cornea, creating a thin flap.
- The experienced ophthalmic surgeon gently lifts the flap.
- An Excimer laser is then applied to the eye, reshaping the corneal tissue and thus correcting the refractive error.
- The flap is gently replaced and aligned back into its original position.
- The flap will heal naturally; no stitches are required.

LASIK surgery aftercare
LASIK is a quick procedure which offers rapid results, even compared to other laser eye surgery treatments. Many patients see results from their surgery within 24 hours, with their lives returning to normal relatively quickly. Three follow up checks take place with your consultant after LASIK surgery, one day, one week and three months after treatment.

The value of LASIK or any laser eye surgery is a very personal thing. Differing priorities and lifestyles will all play a part in how worthwhile surgery will be for each individual. LASIK is considered a permanent treatment, however the natural ageing process can mean some patients will need glasses again later in life due to a condition called presbyopia. However, this usually happens between the ages of 45-55, or later. In general, 10 years after laser eye surgery only about 10 percent of patients require any further enhancement procedure.
LASIK surgery can be performed in as little as 15 minutes, but this is patient dependent. Most patients will be in and out of the theatre within 30 minutes.
LASIK eye surgery costs differ from patient to patient, depending on a number of factors, including: current prescription, desired prescription, age, and eye health, among other variables. In most cases it is possible to permanently fix astigmatism using LASIK surgery.
In PRK surgery, the top layer of the cornea, known as the epithelium, is removed before the surgeon uses lasers to reshape the cornea. In LASIK, the epithelium is not removed. The surgeon instead uses a blade to make a flap in the epithelium which is then lifted up, like a flap, before lasers are used to reshape the cornea. At the end of the procedure, the flap is replaced and heals over the coming months.
SMILE is seen as a newer generation of laser eye surgery and is less invasive than LASIK. SMILE uses a smaller incision than LASIK surgery, which can make any dry eye symptoms after surgery less likely. The SMILE procedure is also generally quicker than LASIK. During the consultation period your consultant will be able to advise which of these procedures will best suit you personally.
