Biography
Mr Mike Adams is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Optegra Eye Health Care clinic in Surrey. He has special interests in the management of external, corneal, and conjunctival eye disease, and cataracts.
Having qualified as a doctor at the University of Cambridge in 2002, he began his ophthalmology career at Kent County Ophthalmic Hospital, one of the oldest eye hospitals in the UK, and continued it with registrar posts at St Thomas’, East Grinstead, and Oxford Eye Hospitals, before completing his training with an honorary fellowship in corneal and external eye disease at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital. After a ‘grown up gap year’ to compete in the Clipper round the world yacht race, Mike took up a consultant post at Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire in 2016, where he co-founded a highly successful cataract unit. He said, “we learned that the key to efficiency is a smooth patient journey on the day of surgery, rather than pushing the surgeon to operate faster. This allowed us to reduce our waiting list to just a few weeks, improve the patient experience, and maintain safe, high-quality care”.
As a regional representative for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, Mike sits on the College’s Training Committee and Council, and maintains a keen interest in teaching and training. Outside ophthalmology, Mike is happiest on a bicycle or a boat.
