Patient Story: Cataract Surgery at our Uttoxeter Eye Clinic

10 February 2025

Carl Flanders, 54, from Leek in Staffordshire, is used to driving long distances delivering motorbikes nationwide. “It’s not unusual for me to start work at 4.30 am and drive long hours, covering over 500 miles from Wales to Scotland and everywhere in between. So having clear vision, especially at night, is really important.”

But whilst riding his motorbike, Carl’s friends noticed that he braked every time a car came in the opposite direction. “I was struggling with the glare from oncoming headlights” explained Carl, “it meant I couldn’t see anything past the car.”

A trip to the optician confirmed a cataract in his right eye

Carl was referred to Optegra Eye Clinic Uttoxeter and within a few weeks, his cataract was removed. “I was feeling a little nervous due to overthinking the process, but the staff made me feel incredibly comfortable and explained everything clearly. I spoke with a lady in the waiting room who had just completed her surgery, and she told me that I wouldn’t feel a thing, which really set my mind to rest.”

“Having the cataract removed has made a big difference to my life and I am no longer affected by light glare at night. It has meant I can confidently ride and deliver motorbikes at any time without worrying that my eyes might be compromised. For more information, learn how soon you can drive after cataract surgery.

“The whole experience exceeded my expectations, and I wouldn’t think twice about recommending Optegra to anyone who has a cataract.”
