Free Transport for Eligible NHS Patients

We are thrilled to offer a free private vehicle transport service for eligible NHS patients attending appointments at selected Optegra hospitals!

This service is on offer in our Birmingham, Leicester, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham locations and is designed to support patients who otherwise may face transportation challenges. Our aim is to better serve NHS patients in these communities, ensuring they receive the eye care they need, when they need it. What’s more, eligible patients can also bring a family member, trusted friend or carer along for the ride and subsequent booked appointments.

Free Transport Criteria

To qualify for this free transport offer you’ll need to meet the following eligibility criteria and then ask for the service when you book your appointment with us:

  • Be attending Optegra for an appointment, or to receive treatment, for a cataract surgery as an NHS patient
  • Have no alternative means of getting to your appointment or treatment, through family, friend, hospital transport, community transport or public transport
  • Live within Birmingham, Leicester, Manchester, Newcastle and / or Nottingham postcodes near partaking Optegra hospitals
  • Be able to get yourself to and from, and in and out, of the supplied vehicle without assistance, or confirm you’ll be able to provide a carer or family member on the day of the transfer to support you getting to and from, and in and out, of the supplied vehicle

 

We can’t provide you with transport if any of the following apply:

  • You need to be transported to a location other than our participating Optegra hospitals and your home
  • You require specialised equipment during your journey and / or have significant mobility impairment which requires specialised or adapted vehicles
  • You have a medical condition or have undergone major surgery where the potential side effects are likely to require assistance or close monitoring during your journey
  • You have safeguarding concerns in relation to travelling alone, if you are unable to travel with a family member, friend or carer
  • You are unable to access existing free community transport options
  • The private hire transport company is unable to provide a vehicle due to a lack of available/suitable vehicles at the time of booking

Supporting you on your journey

If you are eligible for our free transport offer and your booking has been confirmed you will receive an appointment letter, this will include details of how to invoice Optegra for your transfers to and from booked appointments. You will need to provide your pick-up location and time 24 hours prior your appointment. After your NHS cataract treatment, your driver will likely collect you from our hospital reception area to take you back home, where you can focus on a quick recovery.
