PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is a straightforward laser procedure that can eradicate the need for reading glasses. It’s an ideal solution for those over 40 who’ve started to struggle with near focusing – but can also correct long-sightedness and astigmatism.
At Optegra, our priority is ensuring that all our clients benefit from a treatment that is right for them. Read on, as we break down all you need to know about PRESBYOND® surgery.
PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is designed to combat the effects of presbyopia: the condition which compromises near-vision focus.
Presbyopia occurs due to the stiffening of the eye’s natural lens, and usually affects those over 40 whose eye-lens protein has become less flexible.
This hardening of the lens protein results in an inability to properly focus on objects nearby. Distance vision remains unaffected, but the lens’ lack of flexibility means it struggles to adjust to near focus.
Previously, the only solution for presbyopia was wearing reading glasses – but PRESBYOND® has changed all that. Now, the condition can be corrected with a painless, 30-minute procedure.
CEO at Optegra
I now have 20/20 vision and don’t need any glasses. It is as good as it can be and has absolutely improved my quality of life. I wish I had done it earlier!
PRESBYOND® uses a wavefront laser to sculpt the patient’s corneas into the optimal shape for blended vision. This allows for full focus – regardless of whether objects are close by, far away or somewhere in between – and should render the patient spectacle free.
PRESBYOND® works by sculpting the two corneas into different optical states. The dominant eye is shaped to focus on distant objects and intermediate; while the less dominant eye is lasered so it can focus on near and intermediate objects. The brain then blends these two vision profiles – allowing for perfect focus, for all distance ranges.
The PRESBYOND® procedure is very similar to LASIK. It is totally painless and usually lasts no longer than half an hour – with the lasering of each eye typically taking five- ten minutes.
Once anaesthetic eye drops have been applied, your ophthalmologist will use a femtosecond laser to create a thin, round flap on the cornea – enabling access to the stroma, which is the underlying part of the cornea.
The ophthalmologist will then use an excimer laser to reshape the stroma – repeating the process for both eyes.
The recovery period is relatively straightforward. Patients may experience a feeling of grit in the eyes or a heightened light sensitivity, but these symptoms should last no longer than 24-48 hours. PRESBYOND® patients will need to avoid swimming and heavy exercise for around a month.
Since PRESBYOND® requires the brain to process visual stimuli in a different way, there may be a short adjustment period while you adapt to your new vision. However, this should only last for a few weeks.
PRESBYOND® is an ideal solution for sufferers of presbyopia who no longer want to rely on reading glasses.
If you’re over 40 and have noticed your near-vision focus has deteriorated, PRESBYOND® is for you.
Equally, PRESBYOND® can effectively treat patients experiencing presbyopia alongside another vision impairment – such as astigmatism or short-sightedness.
There are many benefits to PRESBYOND® – both in terms of the procedure itself, and its impact on your everyday life.
PRESBYOND® is a less invasive and lower-risk procedure than refractive lens exchange – and also allows for vision to be further adjusted should the eyes deteriorate further.
Equally, PRESBYOND® ends your reliance on glasses – so you won’t have to worry about taking your spectacles on and off, leaving them lying around or buying new pairs year after year.
Head of Eye Sciences, Optegra
I had been thinking about it for quite some time, so was keen to just go for it. I was really impressed with my vision even the very next morning. It was fantastic and the affects were really pretty instant for me.
If you are suffering from presbyopia but are not suitable for laser eye surgery, you can undergo a refractive lens exchange procedure – whereby your eye’s natural lens is removed and replaced with a multifocal lens implant, enabling good focus at all distance ranges.
