What is Single Point of Access & what are the benefits?

If you live in England and require NHS cataract surgery, you can choose to be referred to your preferred hospital or clinic for treatment. This single point of access gives patients the benefits of faster referral appointment times and treatment at the location and provider that is most suited to them.

If, for example, you would like to choose Optegra for your NHS cataract surgery, all you need to do is let your GP or optician know, and they will be able to refer you.

What should I know before choosing a Provider?

If you have been assessed as requiring cataract surgery on the NHS, you have the legal right to choose where to receive treatment within your area. To understand all options, patients can check the following to ensure they are making an informed choice on their treatment provider:

    • Discuss the different provider choices with the optometrist or GP who is referring you. A full list of providers in your area can be accessible upon request. Several factors to consider include waiting times, proximity to your home, and the overall rating of your chosen eye hospital or clinic.
    • You can find a list of NHS cataract surgery providers near you via the NHS website.
    • Check the CQC Rating. The Care Quality Commission is an independent NHS regulatory body that inspects and regulates health and social care services, including NHS eye surgery.

Our new research shows that increased awareness is needed around a patient’s right to choose how, when and where they receive their healthcare treatment. Within cataract surgery, for example, only 14 per cent of adults over 55 realise they can be treated within 4-6 weeks of referral. It is their right to ask for different providers in order to achieve this.
